FRONTLINE READING PROGRAM

Frontline Educational Products is dedicated to the ideal that literacy is attainable for every child. Frontline Reading Program is a scientifically research-based reading initiative that works. The research base is authored by the University of Oregon. This program assists with the No Child Left Behind Act and the Reading First Initiative by teaching children to read before they begin 1st grade. The program is designed for pre-school and kindergarten age children and will take them from the beginning stages of learning letters and sounds to reading on a second grade level by adhering to the five principles of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. We understand the impact early achievement can have on a child’s life. Our comprehensive materials provide you with the tools to help make this a successful, simple process, regardless of the socio-economic status, language barrier, or learning ability of the student.

OUR HISTORY

Frontline Reading Program is the result of a long-term (and ongoing) study of children learning to read. Over the last 17 years, this program has been refined and improved through classroom research using a variety of teachers and student populations. In these test classrooms, student-reading levels were assessed regularly during the school year. Consistently, these children performed well above grade-level standards when using Frontline Reading Program.

The Frontline Reading Program has been used to teach thousands of children to read in classrooms in California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Illinois, New Jersey, Utah, and other midwestern states. In addition to these students the Frontline Reading Program is in over 70,000 homes across the nation and has been endorsed as the best beginning reading program in the Nation by Weekly Reader. We recognize the importance of children learning to read at an early age and the effect that has on their educational success as well as their self-esteem. Children growing up without the benefit of a quality education are at a huge disadvantage - that’s why Frontline’s mission is to teach every child to read.

OUR METHODS

The Frontline Reading Program is specifically designed for pre-school and kindergarten age children. It begins with the basics of learning letters and sounds and incorporates literature very early in the learning process. The program will take a child from these early stages to reading and comprehending on a second grade reading level by the end of the year. The five principals of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) are key focus points for the Frontline Reading Program. The program requires only 30 minutes of instruction time three days per week to see these results. The program is broken into three main steps:

The first step is Letters and Sounds. In this phase of the program both concepts of phonemic awareness and phonics instructions are taught. Only one letter and sound is taught per lesson, and we do not teach them in alphabetical order. The lessons are taught using a multi-sensory approach including music, games, and object lessons so they’re fun for the child. But more importantly, these concepts of visual, musical, motor, analytical, and tactile exercises ensure the lesson will be remembered.

The second step is Blending - the ability to sound out words. Children will learn how to blend after learning only five letters. For example, the first five letters taught in the program are M, A, P, S, and T. After they have learned these letters, the program will help them sound out words that are made of those letters (i.e., map, pat, Sam, tap, etc.). This method has been extremely effective with beginning readers because they don’t feel overwhelmed with trying to remember all 26 sounds when they are learning how to blend.

The third step is Reading Books - the most exciting step for children. After children have learned the first eight letters in the program, they will be introduced to their first reading book. This book only contains words made of the eight letters they have already learned. Then after learning a few more letters they move into the next book and so on. Fluency and Comprehension are key elements of this third step.
